Tennis at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will begin three days after the Wimbledon final, a turnaround the sport has never been asked to make.

The All England Club has published the dates on its own future Championships page: Wimbledon 2028 runs Monday, July 3, to Sunday, July 16.

The Olympic tennis event then runs from Wednesday, July 19, to Friday, July 28, according to NBC Olympics.

Mixed doubles opens the event on July 19. Men’s and women’s singles do not start until Thursday, July 20, four days after the Wimbledon finals.

Players move from grass to outdoor hard court, and from London to Carson Courts at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, roughly 13 miles south of downtown L.A.

The complex will use 11 outdoor hard courts built around a permanent 10,000-capacity centre court, Tennis Now reported. London to Southern California is an eight-hour time change, flown westward.

To fit in at all, the Olympic event was stretched from nine days to 10 and pushed into the second week of the Games rather than the first. The Games run from July 14 to 30, so the opening ceremony falls inside Wimbledon’s closing week, Tennis Majors noted.

The reaction so far has come from tennis journalists, not from inside the game. Pro Football Network gathered posts on X after the dates landed, in a piece syndicated to PFSN.

José Morgado, a Portuguese tennis journalist, wrote, “That’s crazy.”

Dan Wolken, a U.S. sports columnist, wrote, “That’s insane and borderline untenable.”

The three-day crunch lands only on the players who go deepest, which is to say, the ones an Olympic draw can least afford to lose.
