Veteran MLB Pitcher Craig Kimbrel’s Brother Dead at 36 Following Motorcycle Crash

Former Atlanta Braves pitcher Craig Kimbrel’s brother, Matt Kimbrel, has died.

Police said Matt was speeding on his motorcycle in the brothers’ hometown of Huntsville, Alabama, at around 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, when a dump truck ahead of him slowed down to turn, per WCTV. Unable to stop in time, Matt lost control and slid into the truck.

The Madison County coroner confirmed that he died from his injuries at the hospital, per WAFF. He was 36.

No criminal charges are likely to be filed, per the outlet.

Like his older brother, Matt had previously been a pitcher. He was drafted by Atlanta in 2012 and played for three years in the minor leagues. He recently worked as a pitching coach for Talley Performance.

Craig, who was drafted by Atlanta in 2007, is a former Cy Young contender, 2011 National League Rookie of the Year, and nine-time All-Star. The veteran closer, 38, has played for 12 teams in the major leagues and won the World Series in 2018 with the Boston Red Sox. He signed with the Kansas City Royals in August.

Matt is survived by his fiancée, Genevieve Hartman.

“My fiancé passed away, and right now I truly don’t have the words,” she wrote on Facebook. “I know there are people who love us and will have questions, but I’m asking for a little time and space before I’m ready to talk about what happened or say anything more.”

“Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we try to process this unimaginable loss,” she added. “I’ll share more when I’m ready.”
