Morgan Rogers has completed one of the biggest deals of the summer soccer transfer window, joining Chelsea from Aston Villa for a reported £117 million, a British transfer record.
The 23-year-old England forward signed a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge, Sky Sports reported. Neither club officially disclosed the fee, but British outlets consistently put it at a reported £117 million.
Rogers is now the most expensive British player ever bought, surpassing recent benchmarks set by the likes of Jack Grealish and Declan Rice and, earlier this summer, the £116 million Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson.
It is not a global record, though.
The world’s priciest deals of all time, led by Neymar da Silva Santos Jr.‘s £198 million move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 and Kylian Mbappé‘s £160 million switch, still surpass Rogers’ fee.
Villa weren’t the only beneficiaries from the transfer, however.
Middlesbrough, the second-tier club that sold Rogers to Villa for £16 million in February 2024, wrote in a sell-on clause worth 20 percent of any profit. The clause will hand Boro a windfall of around £20 million, a record sell-on fee for a Premier League deal, flowing to a club a level below the top flight.
Chelsea saw off Arsenal, who had made Rogers a top target before declining to match the bid, according to Sky Sports.
Rogers called the switch a natural fit. “Chelsea is the biggest club in London,” he told TNT Sports. “The way the club wants to go, and how it wants to move forward, it’s something I want to be a part of, and I think it was just perfect for me.”
